As San Jose prepares to dismantle its largest homeless encampment, inadequate housing options leave many residents without places to go. Outreach workers promised housing availability, but hotel conversions for temporary housing and safe sleeping sites will not open until late August or September. Tiny home openings have also been delayed into the fall, leaving many residents, such as Jennifer Lagone, frustrated with the lack of placement options. The safe sleeping site is intended as a temporary navigation center, but bans on RVs complicate their situation further.
Jennifer Lagone expressed frustration, stating, "The runaround is quite annoying. You're not getting anywhere. Supposedly all these places are supposed to be giving out the hotel vouchers, and I've seen nobody move yet."
The city's new safe sleeping site is designed as a temporary navigation center, where residents can stay for three to five weeks while awaiting housing placements.
