"Lonely and cold, and I try to just think myself to sleep. It warms my heart to the core that they take their free time to come out here,"

Dropping temperatures in San Jose have increased danger for people living unhoused. Two organizations, Unhoused Response Group and GRACE, distributed blankets, thermals, hygiene kits, foot warmers, hot chocolate, and other cold-weather gear at homeless encampments. Volunteers loaded vans and matched clothing sizes to recipients. Medical examiner data shows hypothermia contributed to one death early in the year. HomeFirst operates two overnight warming centers with 35 beds each; both locations are full with waiting lists but staff say no one will be turned away and transportation is provided to available sites. Some advocates say existing capacity remains insufficient.
