Kelly Pardy was born with juvenile macular degeneration, a visual impairment affecting central vision. The condition contributed to low mood during a period of unemployment. A 2023 referral to an eight-week "blue" social prescribing scheme run by the Ocean Conservation Trust included snorkelling, rock-pooling and visits to the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. Participation eased her anxiety, helped clear her mind, and supported her return to work; she later volunteered for the charity. In the NHS these programmes are known as green social prescriptions. A four-year national pilot ended in March and was judged successful, but funding remains uncertain and charities are calling for government commitment. The charity has spent 25,000 over the last three years on its "blue mind" social prescribing.
