Pet insurance and vaccinations: A buyer's guide
Briefly

"Many pet insurance plans exclude or limit coverage for routine wellness services like examinations, nail trims, diagnostic testing, and vaccinations or offer these services on a higher-cost plan," says Dr. Robert Arrick, veterinarian and medical director at Thrive Pet Healthcare and a partner at Park Animal Hospital in San Francisco.
"Routine wellness visits allow your veterinary team to obtain important information about your pet and identify potential issues early, preventing more serious and costly problems that might arise if left untreated," Arrick says.
In addition to a wellness plan from a pet insurer, you can save money on vaccines through membership plans at vet offices, local and national organizations, and charity programs.
Pet insurance usually only covers vaccines if you buy a wellness plan for an additional fee. Not all pet insurance companies offer wellness plans and vaccine coverage, so you may have to shop around to find what you're looking for.
