Nigeria's diabetes rates rise sharply among young DW 11/24/2025
"We are seeing diabetes in younger people now,"
"We need early screening, public education and access to affordable test kits and insulin,"
"The doctors and nurses explained, but they didn't explain so much. They just told me to take my medications and I should not get injured."
"I broke my leg, and it has not healed for a year because of diabetes. I realized it is a very serious condition,"
Rapid urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, and diets high in fried foods and sugar are driving a surge in diabetes across Nigeria. Type 1 diabetes cases are rising sharply and many young people remain undiagnosed because of low awareness and limited screening. Nigeria now has about 11.4 million people living with diagnosed diabetes, one of the highest totals in sub-Saharan Africa. Health advocates and associations are urging declaration of a state of emergency on diabetes care and calling for early screening, public education, affordable test kits and insulin, and improved access in underserved communities. Lack of patient education and interrupted treatment contribute to severe complications and non-healing injuries.
