New strain of mpox found in California
Briefly

The California Department of Public Health has reported the first known case of clade I mpox, a potentially more dangerous strain different from the strain that circulated in 2022.
Historically, clade I has been known to result in more severe illnesses than clade II, but recent infections have not been as clinically severe as previous outbreaks.
Officials estimate that there have been nearly 47,000 suspected cases of mpox in Africa this year, with a significant spike in the last six weeks.
The World Health Organization will convene an emergency committee soon to evaluate if mpox continues to pose a public health emergency of international concern.
