The 78th World Health Assembly faces unprecedented challenges, including the U.S. withdrawal from the WHO and economic instability. Health ministers are tasked with allocating limited funds effectively, yet must prioritize key health issues, notably chronic kidney disease. A proposed resolution, led by Guatemala and supported by 19 countries, aims to designate kidney disease as a critical public health concern alongside other non-communicable diseases. This recognition is vital for addressing premature deaths and disabilities caused by kidney disease globally in accordance with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
This meeting presents an opportunity to reduce the global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.4.
Delegates must not lose sight of crucial strategic issues, like supporting a resolution that calls for the WHO to recognize kidney disease as a major cause of death.
