Immigrants Are Skipping Vital Health Care Appointments Amid Federal Raids
"There's blood everywhere, and the baby's dead,"
"The baby was completely gray,"
"I assured her. I promised her that she was going to be safe,"
A Homeland Security enforcement operation in southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi provoked widespread fear among immigrant communities. A Guatemalan tenant delivered a premature baby at home and the mother refused hospital care for fear of detention. Cristiane Rosales-Fajardo, an immigrant and grassroots organizer in New Orleans East with experience delivering babies but no formal medical training, responded to a panicked call. She performed CPR, called 911, and comforted the parents. The newborn initially was lifeless and gray but revived after resuscitation and transport was sought for both mother and baby.
