'I Loved This Life': Mom Who Wrote Her Way Through ALS Announces Her Death
"Sara Bennett announced her death the way she did everything else: thoughtfully, plainly and on her own terms. "I am not in pain, or tired," she wrote. "I can laugh, talk, and I can move." Looking back on the last few months of her life, Bennett said she was grateful she had not gone suddenly - even with the suffering - because the time allowed her to finish her legacy work."
"Her final thoughts widened beyond herself. "Even if you don't believe in anything," she wrote, "I am feeding the earth, and my tree." The idea was one she had spoken about months earlier. In October, Bennett told TODAY that she was planning a green burial, a decision she saw as one last way to give back. She wanted, she said, "to help the planet." "I loved this life," she added, "and am grateful for the time.""
Sara Bennett died on Jan. 12 at age 39 after a nearly three-year battle with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that gradually removed her ability to speak, move and chew while she maintained a warm smile. She communicated with family using eye-gaze technology and prioritized leaving practical and emotional guidance for her sons, Lincoln, 9, and William, 7, and her husband, Rusty. She created two scrapbooks filled with letters and advice, often emphasizing kindness. She planned a green burial to give back to the planet and expressed gratitude for time that allowed completion of her legacy work.
