How your research can survive a US federal grant termination
Briefly

Briana Mezuk, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan, lost a $12.9-million NIH grant awarded for a project assessing dementia risks in Black Americans. The grant aimed to utilize data from the National Survey of American Life, focusing on life experiences and mental health influences over 25 years. However, it was terminated due to the Trump administration's opposition to projects emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Over 4,500 NIH grants, totaling approximately $6.1 billion, have been canceled, reflecting a broader trend affecting research funding in the US.
The largest studies on dementia risk only have 800 Black participants. We were going to have 3,000. It is critically important that a
Mezuk planned to follow up with those participants 25 years after the first interviews took place and examine how their life experiences and mental health had contributed to their dementia risk.
