Toronto Public Health reported 13 cases of invasive meningococcal disease so far this year, surpassing annual cases since 2002. The disease has caused two deaths and can spread through close contact, affecting children, teenagers, and young adults.
Invasive meningococcal disease, caused by Neisseria meningitides bacteria, spreads through saliva and can lead to meningitis or bloodstream infection. However, it can be treated with antibiotics. Toronto Public Health recommends vaccination, especially for travelers and those in large gatherings.
