Hoarding Disorder Prevalence: A Scientific Assessment
Briefly

Hoarding disorder (HD) has been estimated to affect 2.5% of the population, contrary to popular belief that it is more common. A systematic review and meta-analysis by Postlethwaite, Kellett, and Mataix-Cols analyzed existing studies to produce this estimate. The researchers focused on high-quality prevalence studies, requiring a minimum of 1,009 participants and adherence to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. Their findings indicate that there is no significant difference in incidence rates by gender, challenging some misconceptions about HD.
Hoarding disorder affects 2.5% of the population, indicating that while often perceived as common, its actual prevalence is lower than many believe.
By applying strict inclusion criteria and conducting a systematic review, researchers provided a more accurate estimate of hoarding disorder, determining its prevalence is about 1 in 40.
