PFAS, known as forever chemicals, persist in the environment and pose serious health risks, including cancer, immune issues, and fertility problems. A study revealed that nearly one-third of tested reusable period products contained PFAS, with some levels originating from manufacturing rather than just packaging. Researchers found that these toxic chemicals can be absorbed through the skin, potentially harming users. Notably, some reusable products contained no PFAS, indicating that their inclusion is unnecessary for product efficacy.
PFAS can affect fertility, sperm quality or even the development of the child in the womb. Toxicologist Marike Kolossa-Gehring emphasized these serious health effects.
We found PFAS in some, but not all of the products. So it's not necessary. Some don't have PFAS, and they sell fine.
The skin absorbs between 1% and 50% of PFAS in the product. Even if only 1% or 2% are absorbed, that's still bad.
Almost a third of the period underwear, menstrual cups and reusable pads tested contained PFAS, highlighting pervasive contamination in these products.
