The chief of the Hunt Volunteer Fire Department, Lee Pool, declared a 'code red' early Friday after being trapped by floodwaters on his way to the fire station. Pool expressed feelings of helplessness as he witnessed a car with people float by. He and volunteer Mitzi Silber have coordinated search efforts and have facilitated an outpouring of donations from the community to support the affected families.
Crews from across the country are lining the main highway through Hunt, Texas, searching for the more than 170 unaccounted for victims following the deadly Fourth of July flood.
Lee Pool, the chief of the Hunt Volunteer Fire Department, said that as soon as he realized what was happening, he called in a 'code red' to the sheriff's department, meaning the situation was 'really bad.'
Pool said he does not know what happened to the people in the car. When asked if that has stuck with him, he said, 'Of course. Of course.'
Silber said the fire department has received an incredible amount of donations from families and churches across the state and beyond.
