FDA issues urgent recall of eggs contaminated with deadly bacteria
Briefly

An outbreak of salmonella has sickened 95 people across 14 states after consumption of contaminated eggs, with 18 hospitalizations and no reported deaths. The contaminated Large Brown Cage-Free 'Sunshine Yolks' from Country Eggs were recalled by the FDA. Contaminated cartons were sold under Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho and Nijiya Markets, and as 'Sunshine Yolks' or 'Omega-3 Golden Yolks' to restaurants. Sell-by dates range from July 1 to September 16. Health officials advise discarding or returning eggs and washing items and surfaces that contacted the eggs. Most patients are in California. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and cramps; severe cases can lead to sepsis, especially in vulnerable populations.
The CDC confirmed 95 cases in the outbreak, with patients suffering from salmonella, an infection that in serious cases can cause a fatal blood infection. Eighteen people have been hospitalized, the agency said. There have been no deaths reported to date. The outbreak has been linked to Large Brown Cage-Free 'Sunshine Yolks' sold by California-based brand Country Eggs, which have been recalled by the FDA.
Officials are concerned the eggs may still be lurking in people's kitchens, and are urging people to throw out the eggs or return them to sellers for a full refund. People are also being told to wash items and surfaces that came into contact with the eggs. The CDC revealed the recall in a notice today, and said that most of the patients were in California (73 cases in the state).
