During the sixth day of the High Court trial, expert witness Professor Anthony Coates critiqued the Department of Health's testing methods for PPE Medpro's surgical gowns. He highlighted that testing was conducted long after delivery and under uncertain storage conditions, which could invalidate contamination claims. Coates emphasized the importance of proper documentation and chain-of-custody in sterility testing, stating that the failure to link batch and test data raises significant concerns about the validity of the government's claims regarding the gowns' sterility.
Coates explained that some gowns were tested over a year after arrival and had been stored in unknown conditions - including open-air container parks - which could have exposed them to contamination after the fact.
He also raised red flags about the lack of proper chain-of-custody documentation, noting that gown batch numbers and container IDs were not always linked to test results - a serious issue in sterility testing protocols.
