Delayed care to 2 Black pregnant women highlights maternal health disparities
"I felt dismissed"
"No, I can't be discharged. Please don't discharge me because I am about to have this baby,"
"I began to wail because I was in so much pain, and my feelings were hurt because that was happening to me."
Two pregnant Black women nearly 1,000 miles apart experienced delayed or denied hospital care that put them and their babies at risk just before the holidays. One woman was discharged and delivered on the side of an Indiana highway, while another nearly gave birth in a Texas hospital emergency waiting room. Both survived but remained traumatized after incidents were captured on video and shared on social media. Black women die at nearly 3.5 times the rate of white women around childbirth, per a 2023 CDC report. Families and advocates urge medical professionals to address systemic racism in maternal care.
