Call for circumcision safeguards after baby death
"Mohamed Abdisamad underwent a non-therapeutic male circumcision on 12 February 2023, performed by a circumciser who had been recommended to his parents and requested by them to perform the procedure on their son, according to the West London Coroner's report. The boy began showing symptoms of illness three to four days after the procedure and was taken to Hillingdon Hospital by ambulance on 19 February 2023."
"The coroner said there are no national safeguards governing non-therapeutic male circumcision, with no requirements for training, accreditation or registration of those carrying out the procedure, and no rules on record keeping, infection control or aftercare. He also pointed to the lack of a system for obtaining consent prior to the procedure being carried out. The report is being sent to the Department of Health and Social Care, and to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government."
A six-month-old boy died after a non-therapeutic male circumcision performed on 12 February 2023 by a circumciser recommended to his parents. Symptoms developed three to four days later and the child was taken to hospital on 19 February 2023, where he suffered cardiorespiratory arrest and died the same day. A jury inquest concluded on 8 October 2025 that the medical cause of death was an invasive streptococcus pyogenes infection following male circumcision. A prevention of future deaths notification called for regulatory action, noting the absence of national safeguards, training, accreditation, infection control, aftercare and a consent system. The notification was sent to national government departments for response within 56 days, and copies were provided to the child's parents.
