The San Diego County health department is currently investigating the first suspected locally transmitted case of dengue, a tropical disease that has seen increased transmission nationwide.
Local transmission of dengue poses a greater risk as it indicates the potential for an infected mosquito to transmit the virus to a second person.
The county’s Vector Control Program initiated hand spraying insecticide in a 60-acre area in Escondido to prevent further potential transmission of dengue.
Despite the investigation, Dr. Ankita Kadakia has indicated that the overall risk of further dengue transmission in San Diego is believed to be low.
