Black Americans Deserve More Health Care Options, Not Less

The 450 Black-serving hospitals identified by CMS records are facing the same issues as Downstate Medical and One Brooklyn in New York City--severe funding deficits left as a result of COVID-19 caseloads that were the heaviest in the nation.
I believe the health disparities we see are the direct result of decisions as far as 150 years ago to close the 40 Freedman's Hospitals in 1867 and to close medical schools at HBCUs in the early 20th century.
