2 adults and a 4-year-old are pulled from the L.A. River. Another adult and a dog don't make it
Briefly

On Sunday, a group consisting of three adults, a 4-year-old child, and a dog fell into the Los Angeles River. Tragically, one adult and the dog did not survive. The incident took place near Anaheim Street in Long Beach, and although three individuals were rescued, the circumstances surrounding their fall remain unclear. Officials are investigating whether nearby dam conditions played a role, as these dams can create dangerous currents. Drowning incidents are on the rise nationally, prompting concern over water safety.
The National Weather Service says these dams are colloquially known as "drowning machines." They extend across a river from bank to bank and are designed so that water continuously flows past the crest of the dam.
It is unknown what led to the group's fall into the water, or if the depth or current of the river contributed to the deaths of the person and the dog.
