The first presumptive case of H5N1 bird flu in San Francisco was found in a juvenile, who experienced symptoms like fever and conjunctivitis but has since recovered.
"I want to assure everyone in our city that the risk to the general public is low, and there is no current evidence that the virus can be transmitted between people," said Dr. Grant Colfax.
Symptoms of bird flu in humans include eye redness, coughing, fatigue, fever, and headaches. Those experiencing these symptoms are urged by SFDPH to contact their healthcare provider.
SFDPH stated the child initially tested for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV but later tested positive for H5N1 due to enhanced surveillance.
