Imagination is More Than Sensory Replay - News Center
""When you ask someone to imagine the sound of a kid's birthday party, they don't just hear it - they also automatically picture the scene," said senior author Rodrigo Braga, PhD."
""It makes sense that imagination operates in this holistic, higher-level space, given that we use it to plan, understand and speculate.""
Imagination allows individuals to relive past events, rehearse future conversations, and sense experiences without direct interaction. Traditionally, mental imagery was thought to rely on sensory regions of the brain. However, a study indicates that higher-level brain systems that interpret perception are crucial for imagination. Participants imagining various scenarios showed that imagination involves holistic processing of information, representing scenes and ideas rather than merely reactivating sensory input. This suggests a deeper cognitive function in how we visualize and conceptualize experiences.
