WhatsApp Adds Advanced Chat Privacy to Blocks Chat Exports and Auto-Downloads
Briefly

WhatsApp has launched an Advanced Chat Privacy feature to enhance privacy in conversations, allowing users to block others from sharing chat content outside the platform. This feature is particularly useful in group settings with unfamiliar participants. When enabled, it prevents exporting chats and auto-downloading media. In context, this launch comes amidst a significant €200 million fine imposed on Meta for breaching the EU's Digital Markets Act, related to user consent with ads. The fine is for practices from March to November 2024, following DMA's implementation.
"This new setting available in both chats and groups helps prevent others from taking content outside of WhatsApp for when you may want extra privacy," WhatsApp said in a statement.
"This model is not compliant with the DMA, as it did not give users the required specific choice to opt for a service that uses less of their personal data but is otherwise equivalent to the 'personalised ads' service," the Commission said.
