Sainsbury's will run an eight-week live facial recognition trial in two stores, in Sydenham and the Oldfield Sainsbury's Local in Bath, to curb shoplifting. Facewatch is supplying the LFR technology. A July customer survey showed 63 percent support for LFR to identify repeat offenders. Retail crime figures show rising theft and increasing violence and abuse toward shopworkers, with the British Retail Consortium reporting 20 million incidents costing £2.2 billion and daily estimates of more than 2,000 instances of violence or abuse. Privacy campaigners including Big Brother Watch warn of false accusations and secret watchlists.
