The GSMA has announced support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in the Rich Communications Services (RCS) protocol, enhancing security for messages across Android and iOS platforms. The new specifications, derived from the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, aim to keep messages confidential as they traverse different clients. This marks RCS as the first major messaging service to implement interoperable E2EE. This decision comes as Apple introduces RCS support in iOS 18, reflecting a broader collaboration in secure messaging between the two platforms.
To that end, the new GSMA specifications for RCS include E2EE based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol via what's called the RCS Universal Profile 3.0.
These procedures ensure that messages and other content such as files remain confidential and secure as they travel between clients.
RCS continues to support a range of interoperable messaging functions between iOS and Android users, such as group messaging, high-resolution media sharing, and read receipts.
