A website suffered a nearly 50% decline in daily traffic due to a hacking incident that resulted in over 210,000 fake product pages being indexed by Google. Despite cleaning up the hack and removing the compromised content, the site's traffic has continued to drop. The recovery timeline remains uncertain, and efforts to boost traffic through other channels were suggested. It was highlighted that security updates are crucial to prevent such incidents in the future.
Our website just suffered a massive traffic drop - from 2,000+ daily visits to about 1,100 - almost 50% wiped out in just two weeks, and it's still going down as I write this post.
The cleanups were done almost 2 weeks ago, I'm still waiting to see the graph going back up.
These kinds of hacks can take a bit of time to settle back down (which is one reason you should always be on top of things in terms of updates & security).
One way you can also take the bite out of situations like these is to build up other traffic channels - for example, to encourage people to come (back) to your site on their own.
