"Mohamed sued Alphabet, noting that the list didn't even contain his name. Rather, his name was merely similar to "one or more Muslim or Middle Eastern names on the list," his lawsuit stated. He also said he only sued because he couldn't get a human at Waymo to actually address his issue. However, he dropped his lawsuit after Waymo instituted a process for users to request Waymo workers to conduct an audit of their ban."
Waymo uses self-driving robotaxis and changed user policies after an LGBTQ+ rights activist sued Alphabet. The user was unable to book rides for years because his name resembled names on a U.S. Treasury Department watchlist. His account registration in early November 2023 triggered a ban that prevented ride booking, and support requests were repeatedly closed without explanation. Employees later said an identity verification service cross-checked users against the SDN list, which includes more than 19,000 names and aliases tied to foreign agents, terrorists, and other national security threats. The user said his name was not on the list and that he sued because he could not reach a human. He later dropped the lawsuit after Waymo created an audit request process for banned users.
