The Vatican bank's recent enforcement of a marriage ban among employees aimed at preventing nepotism, has led to the firing of a newlywed couple.
The newlyweds, known as 'Romeo and Juliet', were given 30 days to resign one of their positions but chose to be fired instead.
Defending its policy, the Vatican bank emphasized that equal treatment and prevention of conflicts of interest were fundamental reasons for imposing the marriage ban.
The couple has appealed to Pope Francis over the injustice of their situation, while an association for Vatican lay workers argues that family should not be endangered by bureaucratic rules.
