In a bid to uphold academic independence, the University of Pennsylvania will refrain from issuing public statements on external events unless they directly impact the university.
Interim president J. Larry Jameson noted that while these institutional messages often aimed to express solidarity, they ultimately hinder the free expression of ideas by individuals.
This policy aligns the University of Pennsylvania with other institutions that have similarly reduced public statements following tensions related to global events, particularly the Israel-Hamas war.
By limiting the university's institutional voice, Penn aims to foster a more unencumbered environment for ideas, allowing expert voices within the community to be amplified.
