As of Monday, the U.K. implemented enforcement measures under the Online Safety Act, prompting Ofcom to start a program targeting file-sharing and storage services. Ofcom's findings indicate that these services are often used for distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The regulator has contacted several of these companies to notify them of upcoming information requests regarding their current and planned safety measures. Companies failing to comply with the OSA risk penalties of up to 10% of their global annual turnover.
Ofcom's investigation will focus on file-sharing services' effectiveness in preventing the dissemination of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and ensure compliance with new safety measures.
Under the new enforcement program, Ofcom will send formal information requests to file-storage services to assess their measures against child sexual abuse material.
