"I can no longer carry out my duties in the knowledge that this Department may be complicit in War Crimes," said Mark Smith in his resignation letter, expressing deep concerns over the U.K.'s arms sales to Israel amidst allegations of genocide in Gaza.
"There is no justification for the U.K.'s continued arms sales to Israel yet somehow it continues. I have raised this at every level in the organisation including through an official whistle blowing investigation and received nothing more than 'thank you we have noted your concerns,'" stated Smith, highlighting the dismissal of serious concerns about legality in arms transfers.
"Ministers claim that the U.K. has one of the most 'robust and transparent' arms export licensing regimes in the world, however this is the opposite of the truth," Smith noted, criticizing the lack of accountability and transparency in the British government's actions.
Pro-Palestine groups welcomed Smith's resignation but emphasized the need for Labour leaders to take stronger actions to end the U.K.'s complicity in genocide, indicating a broader demand for accountability.
