Mainstream policies regarding immigration enforcement tend to push vulnerable populations further underground, increasing their risk of exploitation and making it harder for charities to help them. 80 organisations emphasize the need for a new approach that provides undocumented migrants with pathways to regularization to offer them protection from exploitative practices and human trafficking.
Nazek Ramadan of Migrant Voice stated that existing immigration raids and deportations fail to tackle the root causes leading people to become undocumented. Many face unjust circumstances like bureaucratic errors which result in loss of status, emphasizing a need for the government to rethink its strategy towards undocumented migrants and focus on their rights and well-being.
Despite the government's insistence on protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation, the recent operation led to the detention of 85 illegal workers. Charities argue that the current immigration system needs reform to allow undocumented individuals to secure their status and work legally, fostering better protection against exploitation.
The letter coordinated by Migrant Voice with support from over 80 organizations argues for the need for regularization routes for undocumented migrants, allowing them to work legally, thus mitigating the risks posed by exploitation and trafficking.
