Mick Whelan, the union's general secretary, stated, "It was not a fight we sought, or wanted. All we sought after five years without a pay rise...was a dent in the cost of living" to highlight the rationale behind the strikes.
The deal, which includes a 5% backdated pay rise for 2022-23 and subsequent increases, signals the end of industrial action that caused significant disruption for two years, with 84% of union members voting in favor.
