Marks & Spencer (M&S) is grappling with a significant cyber attack, prompting individuals with similar experiences to speak out. Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive of Harris Federation, recounted their own cyber attack from 2021 by the Russian ransomware group REvil. The hackers demanded a ransom of $4 million in cryptocurrency, escalating to $8 million if not paid. The attack led to the loss of vital data and severely disrupted school operations. Instead of paying, they employed cyber specialists who negotiated with the hackers to buy time for system recovery, ultimately taking three months to restore functionality.
"It was an absolute nightmare. Their purpose was to blackmail us into paying four million dollars in cryptocurrency within ten days."
"The Russians had stolen data from us, and threatened to put this stuff up on the dark web."
