Following the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq in the early 2000s, the US sought to improve its methods of warfare, gear, and arms for soldiers in the fight against terrorists. These needs ushered in a boom of technological advancements over the last twenty years. Drones and robot dogs may have seemed futuristic at one time, but they are now part of our everyday vocabulary.
In the first decade of the new millennium, a variety of rifles were introduced to cater to the needs of the type of warfare the military was involved in. Sniper rifles, anti-material rifles, assault carbines, and designated marksmen rifles all played an important role in America's 'War on Terror.' A notable contribution is the 'Sledgehammer' or MPS AA-12, introduced in 2005. It is an assault combat shotgun effective in urban combat zones when breaching doors and storming buildings.
To identify American military guns introduced in the 2000s, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed a catalog of small arms from Military Factory, an online database of military vehicles, arms, and aircraft. We ordered these guns alphabetically and included supplemental information regarding the type of small arm, year introduced, manufacturer, firing action, caliber, and feed.
The tools and equipment in a military's arsenal are critical to its operation, precision, and preparedness. Having the latest technology ensures its safety and success in any operation it is involved in. The military draws on experts to design and test the new gear and on manufacturers to produce these weapons in mass quantities. The speed at which technology changes means this process.
