A court in Las Palmas has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of a German woman who was attacked by a shark while sailing off the Canary Islands.
The maritime rescue service reported that the 30-year-old woman was 270 nautical miles away from the Canary Islands when the fatal shark attack occurred.
Efforts to rescue the woman included scrambling a Spanish air force helicopter, which reached her only after she had suffered severe injuries.
The incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of sailing in the region amid a backdrop of increased migrant rescues by maritime services.
