Invitation Homes, the nation's largest single-family landlord, has agreed to pay $48 million to settle allegations of illegal junk fees and unfair eviction practices.
The settlement highlights that consumers often faced undisclosed fees raising rent by over $1,700 a year, revealed only after signing a lease.
FTC stated that Invitation Homes withheld security deposits and engaged in unfair practices, misleading tenants about available federal eviction protections during the pandemic.
Lin Chairman of the FTC expressed that no American should be subjected to illegal tactics that unjustly increase housing costs or lead to eviction.
