The newly launched online passport renewal initiative by the U.S. State Department aims to simplify the renewal process for citizens, albeit with certain eligibility restrictions.
Currently, renewing your passport online doesn't expedite the process; the standard six to eight weeks processing time applies, just as it does for in-person renewals.
Only adults whose passports are expiring within the next year or have been expired for less than five years can utilize online renewal options.
The State Department's past experiences with online renewals were halted due to pandemic-related backlogs, but the new initiative is now officially active.
