The Alternative Dispute Resolution Act of 1998 defined ADR as any process or procedure, other than a judge's adjudication, involving a neutral third party to assist in resolution.
Although parties may settle patent disputes themselves, often the involvement of neutral third parties is necessary for effective resolution, enhancing satisfaction and efficiency.
