The first handful of Next Generation Delivery Vehicles that rolled onto postal routes in August in Athens, Georgia, are getting rave reviews from letter carriers accustomed to cantankerous older vehicles that lack modern safety features and are prone to breaking down and even catching fire. Odd appearance aside, the new trucks represent a significant step forward, prioritizing safety, comfort, and utility in contrast to the aging Grumman Long Life Vehicles, which have been both noisy and hazardous.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's 10-year, $40 billion transformation includes not just new trucks but a total renovation of aging facilities and the processing and transportation networks. The new Next Generation Delivery Vehicles will primarily be electric models and are part of a broader effort to streamline and modernize the Postal Service’s operations across the country, replacing outdated infrastructure that has burdened mail delivery for decades.
