The death toll from flooding in Myanmar triggered by Typhoon Yagi has spiked to 226 in just over a week, with about 77 people still missing. The devastating flooding has affected approximately 631,000 people across the southeast Asian country, with blocked roads and damaged infrastructure severely hindering relief efforts. Over 150,000 homes were flooded, and nearly 260,000 hectares of crops were destroyed, according to state media and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) emphasized that the affected areas include camps for displaced people who already faced limited services due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, which was triggered by the military coup in 2021 that ousted the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi. This disaster compounds the humanitarian crisis affecting roughly a third of the 55 million people in the country, highlighting the dire need for urgent aid and support.
