Meta training AI on social media posts? 7% in Europe say yes
Briefly

A study found that only 7% of Facebook and Instagram users in Germany support Meta training its AI on their data. Additionally, 27% were unaware of Meta's data usage for this purpose. Privacy advocate Max Schrems indicated that users do not wish to provide their social media data for Meta's competitive edge. Meta has tried to justify its data processing through 'legitimate interests' rather than opting for user consent, which led to suspension of AI training in Europe. Despite challenges, authorities approved Meta's data use under GDPR regulations.
Meta probably knows that no one wants to provide the data from their social media accounts just so that Meta gets a competitive advantage over other AI companies that do not have access to such data.
Instead of asking for consent and get[ting] 'no' as an answer, they just decided that their right to profits overrides the privacy rights of at least 274 million EU users.
