Paul Rees, chief executive of the NPA, highlighted the situation: "Pharmacies are being pushed to the brink by a decade of real-terms cuts. Despite the growing pressures, government funding has not kept pace, leaving many unable to sustain their essential services… This neglect has forced us into a position where significant cutbacks are the only option."
The NPA reported a stark decline, stating, "1,500 pharmacies have closed since 2016 due to overwhelming workloads and budget cuts… Since 2015-16, core government funding has fallen by 40% when adjusted for inflation, which is unacceptable and unsustainable for the community pharmacy sector."
