World Boxing has appointed Gennady Golovkin as the chair of its new Olympic Commission, tasking him with establishing the organization as the recognized international federation for boxing, especially following the IBA’s removal from the Olympic recognition by the IOC.
Golovkin emphasized the significance of preserving boxing as an Olympic sport: 'For me personally, as well as for all the sports world, it is important to preserve boxing as an Olympic sport, and this will be my top priority,' focusing on working with the IOC.
In light of the IBA's controversial status, World Boxing’s Olympic Commission aims to attract new members and ensure financial sustainability while advocating for boxing's rehabilitation into the Olympic program.
Golovkin also made a commitment to uphold Olympic values, stating, 'I intend to work closely with the IOC on issues of boxing's commitment to the Olympic values of honesty, fairness and transparency,' reinforcing the integrity of the sport.
