Inhumane' and understaffed HMP Wandsworth having worst year in memory'
Briefly

HMP Wandsworth is enduring its worst year in recent memory, with a damning report highlighting inhumane conditions and rampant violence in the prison beset by staff absences. Nearly half of officers had less than a year's experience, undermining the prison's functionality.
The crisis-stricken jail was put into emergency measures following severe concerns over security failings, overcrowding, drugs, violence, and self-harm, prompting a redirection of £100m for urgent improvements.
Wandsworth IMB Chair Matthew Andrews expressed that this year has been particularly detrimental, with the same troubling issues raised in previous reports going ignored by the Ministry of Justice.
As of April, the rate of staff absences at Wandsworth rarely fell below 50%, causing most inmates to spend 22 hours a day locked in cells built for one person.
