Suraj Thomas was shocked to find himself a victim of an online rental scam in Kitchener, where at least 35 individuals lost a combined $40,000.
After transferring $4,100 for first and last month's rent for a seemingly legitimate apartment, Thomas was left devastated when the supposed owner failed to show up.
The apparent tenant indicated he was leaving for a job in Nova Scotia and Thomas believed he was following a legitimate rental procedure.
When they arrived to collect the keys, they learned from a building representative that they, along with others, had been victims of a scam.
