Jacob Saunders, 25, from Silver Spring, Maryland, recently lost his job at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services amid budget cuts. Initially optimistic about his government career path, he completed a master's in homeland security and gained valuable experience through a student internship at the Department of Homeland Security. After securing a competitive job at CMS, he began to hear rumors of layoffs. Ultimately, despite being offered his job back, he chose to decline the rehire opportunity after being let go in February 2024.
I heard small talk about possible job cuts. One coworker jokingly said something like, "What if we all get fired?" Still, I wasn't taking it too seriously.
After what felt like a long time of applying, I became a student intern at the Department of Homeland Security. It was a wonderful experience.
