On the morning of Sunday, August 18, 2024, Gardaí intervened in a public order incident at the Church of the Irish Martyrs in Letterkenny, disrupting the 11.30am mass.
As members of the congregation were asked to remain in the church, the ongoing dispute escalated outside, prompting multiple units of Gardaí to restore order before five arrests were made.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed that five men, aged from the 30s to the 60s, were charged following the public order offences, including the seizure of weapons.
The incident resulted in a short delay to the Sunday mass presided over by Fr Dominic Thoomkuzh, highlighting tensions that can disrupt community gatherings.
