The government has implemented emergency measures, known as Operation Early Dawn, to alleviate prison overcrowding as more rioters are set to be sentenced.
Prisons and probation minister Lord Timpson stated, 'We inherited a justice system in crisis... making difficult but necessary decisions to maintain operations has been imperative.'
Deputy Chief Constable Nev Kemp emphasized the collaboration with criminal justice partners to manage system demand and ensure public safety amidst ongoing arrests.
With Operation Early Dawn, defendants awaiting court appearances in northern England will remain in police cells until there is available prison space.
